The needs of some users must be balanced against the needs of others. Some want a pleasant online environment, and others want free speech that they believe includes the right to personally attack and threaten others on the site. Many users do not understand the implications of what they are asking for. I lost a favorite on-line friend shortly after putting Blue Dwarf on the web because I tried to provide her with an environment that she said she wanted where people treat each other with kindness and respect. After only a few weeks on Blue Dwarf, she began strongly criticizing another user from a different culture who did not understand the women's issues that are discussed in Western cultures. She said point blank that she could not respect someone who holds his views. When I tried my best to point out to her publicly and privately without being critical that her behavior was at odds with the environment she had said she wanted, she took my words as an angry attack. She labeled me a "rape apologist" and deleted her account. Clearly, no website or website administrator can make everyone happy all of the time.
